U.S. Mint Decides To Eliminate The Penny

Coinflation.com Press Release
Posted April 1, 2007

U.S. Mint Director Edmund Moy announced today they will cease production of the U.S. cent immediately. "We met as a staff and decided a change is warranted at this time," Moy told a group of reporters in the U.S. Mint Pressroom.

Speculation had been mounting that the Mint would make a change soon. Recents public opinion polls suggested that removing the penny from circulation would be well-received and have little impact on the economy.

When asked why they're moving ahead with this change without congressional approval, Moy answered, "I consulted with the Attorney General and he advised me congressional approval wasn't necessary, despite what the constitution says. This is a decision that the executive branch has complete authority to make. Since I serve at the pleasure of the President, I made the call. It's a done deal."

When asked to further clarify if it was his decision solely, or made collectively by his staff (as stated earlier in the press conference), he suddenly didn't recall details of the meeting.

"I'm not really involved with the day-to-day, I don't recall who actually made the decision."

When further pressed about the details of the decision, Mint Director Moy stated that the penny has been prominently involved with financial transactions involving well-known terror groups. "Listen, we're trying to protect the American public from the terrorists by eliminating the penny. The security of the nation depends on this action. I think the American people know exactly what the threat is and we're just doing what's in their best interest."

Moy added, "To protect freedom, we're going to aggressively prosecute anyone attempting to use a penny, or even carry a penny."

The new rule goes into effect April 1, 2007.

That's alright, but let's not have anymore talk about holding on to our pennies after April 1st.

Re: U.S. Mint To Eliminate The Penny.

ths could be used in the future to justify just about any action, just change the names:

When asked why they're moving ahead with this change without congressional approval, Moy answered, "I consulted with the Attorney General and he advised me congressional approval wasn't necessary, despite what the constitution says. This is a decision that the executive branch has complete authority to make. Since I serve at the pleasure of the President, I made the call. It's a done deal."

this could also be used:
Moy added, "To protect freedom, we're going to aggressively prosecute anyone attempting to use a (gun, gold/silver coin, cash) penny, or even carry a penny(gun, gold/silver coin, cash) ."

The new rule goes into effect April 1, 2007.

Wow what balls. BTW if you think it matters who gets elected think again. I saw Ron Paul on Maher's show the other nite and while the format isn't made for him I was thoroughly unimpressed with Paul. I know something about the guy so I understand he wasn't in a good position to get his message out and Maher wasn't going to steer him in the right direction. That said the guy is too dry and boring for Joe Sixpack to latch on to. Needs a good PR guy badly.

Reminds me of the Sports Illustrated article from back in the late '70's. About a baseball player named Sid Finch. Came from almost out of nowhere, but because of his training under a tibet monk and a muscular anomoly in his throwing hand, he could throw a baseball in the 130 to 140 mph range. 40% faster than the fastest ML pitcher. And he had accuracy. They would only let him pitch a few innings at a time, but all but a few guess swinging batters would wiff at his pitches. He would come and go into spring training camp as he wished and his religious outlook on things made him interesting and quite standoffish at the same time. One day, he simply walked out of his hotel room, got a cab and was never seen again. All this curiously reported for the first time on April 1 of 1977 I think.

Hey, Sid Finch is not made up! I know him. He has been to my place a few times. He throws like the wind. And accurate too. He knocked a post out with a warm up pitch. Brought the porch eaves crashing down.
He didn't make it in the bigs for a few reasons. One, he wouldn't wear the uniform. Two, he only threw fast balls. And three, his delivery produced a balk whenever someone was on base.
Yeah, I know Sid Finch. He was over here last April. April 1st.
